Here's how much more you'll pay for electricity from 1 July

From 1 July 2026 most South African municipalities implement their annual tariff increases — on top of Eskom's April hike for direct customers. Roughly two-thirds of households buy power from a municipality, so this round hits the majority of the country.

Nersa approved increases for 176 licensed distributors after 2 000 public comments. The City of Cape Town lands at the low end with +7.5%. Johannesburg, Tshwane, eThekwini, Mangaung and Nelson Mandela Bay sit mid-range at +8.63% to +10.09%. Ekurhuleni takes +12.7% and Buffalo City the worst at +14%.
