We modelled a 2 × Sunman 200W + Runhood F2400 kit against the post-1 July 2026 municipal tariff landscape (R3.50/kWh average, after hikes of +7.5% in Cape Town, +8.6–10.1% in the metros and up to +14% in Buffalo City). Here's what we found.

Theft & wind
Balcony panels are an obvious target. Our kits ship with security cables and UV-stable ties.
Slow charging
A single 200W panel takes ~12 hr to top up an F2400. We recommend at least two panels for daily cycling.
Grid feed-in
South African municipalities ban plug-in grid-tied feeds. Our kits are DC-to-battery only — no back-feed.

- Section 12B: 100% upfront deduction for solar PV under 1 MW; 50/30/20 accelerated depreciation for larger systems, wind and biomass.
- EV manufacturing: 150% tax deduction from 1 March 2026 for EV / hydrogen vehicle production assets.
- VAT refunds: VAT vendors can claim back the 15% VAT on solar installations used for taxable supplies.

For citizens
- Energy Bounce-Back (EBB) loans: R3,000–R300,000 at prime + 2.5% (cap), via Standard Bank, FNB, ABSA, Nedbank.
- Net billing: Cape Town ~R1.12–R1.17/kWh, Johannesburg ~88c/kWh, eThekwini ~136c/kWh — credited to your municipal bill.
- SSEG approval: Apply to your municipality before install; a bidirectional smart meter is required.
- Expired: Section 6C 25% solar rebate ended Feb 2024 — no longer available.
Equipment & installer rules
- Use an inverter on your city's approved list (NRS 097-2-1). Common: Sunsynk, Victron, Deye, Huawei.
- Installer must be PV GreenCard certified for insurance and municipal sign-off.
- A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is mandatory before grid connection.
Insurance & wind installs
- Notify your insurer in writing — declare replacement value, installer, CoC and serial numbers.
- Theft of roof-mounted panels is often sub-limited; confirm "All Risks" cover.
- Wind turbines: SANS 10103 noise <40 dBA at the boundary at night; blade clearance ≥5 m; municipal pre-scrutiny required.
